Through the first solo exhibition , artist Shinkyu Shon presents ‘fused objects,’
that combine the exclusive relationship of heterogeneous physical properties.
Artist Shinkyu Sohn has been steadily exploring by creating an object he calls ‘fused object,’ combining different physical properties by comparing the characteristics of each material. As a designer, his works have been steadily recognized by being a part of the collection by the Daekyo Culture Foundation and RIBO FASHION GROUP, and he was selected as the artist of the Daekyo International Symposium. His works that incorporate the senses of sculptures with materials that have usually been treated as living designs, are shown in the exhibition. By presenting the results of the formative experiment based on his competence as a designer, he intends to demonstrate his competence as an artist as well.
His object is mainly made of hanok materials, stainless steel, granite (Pocheon rock), and glass, and the tension between each material reflects its uniqueness. By selecting wood from a traditional hanok made of natural materials and adding the artificial beauty of stainless steel or glass, the intimate relationship of the materials are used to show architectural completeness. The contrasting properties of each material are expressed so that none of them can be reduced and instead, are fully revealed. Looking closely at each object that borrows the completeness of the architectural structure, elements of heterogeneous texture: wood, glass, and stainless steel are formed as one organism, by each of them hitting and intertwining with one another.
The boundaries between materials are placed with sharp but flexible objects. This formative tension of heterogeneity between the materials acts as a 'fused object' and balances it by working as a rule of symmetry. Through the exhibition, where you can confirm the process of finding
consensus in the confrontation of materiality, artist Shinkyu Shon will newly establish himself as an
artist dealing with physical properties and materials.
첫번째 개인전 <이질과 대칭>을 통해 작가 손신규(b.1993~)는 이질적인 물성의 배타적 관계를 집약시킨 오브제, ‘융합 사물’을 선보인다.
작가 손신규는 질료의 특성을 견주어 서로 다른 물성을 배합한 하나의 오브제, ‘융합 사물’로 탄생시키며 꾸준히 탐구해왔다. 디자이너로서 그의 작업들은 대교문화재단, RIBO FASHION GROUP등에 소장되고 대교 국제 심포지엄 작가로 선정되는 등 꾸준히 인정받아왔다. 리빙 디자인으로 다루어 오던 재료와 조형의 감각들을 또 다르게 녹여낸 작업들이 전시장에 자리한다. 디자이너로서의 역량을 바탕으로 한 조형적 실험의 결과들을 발표하여, 예술가로서의 면모로 그의 역량을 다시 한 번 드러내고자 함이다.
그의 오브제는 한옥 고재와 스테인리스 스틸, 포천석 및 유리를 주요 소재로 하여 소재 저마다의 고유성이 반영되도록 제작되어, 각각의 물질성이 긴장감을 이루는 특징을 지닌다. 자연 재료로 이루어진 전통 건축물 한옥에서 목재를 선택하고 스테인리스 또는 유리의 인공미를 더하여 소재의 긴밀한 관계성을 건축적으로 완결성으로서 구사하였다. 대비되는 각 소재의 특성이 어느 것 하나 축소되지 않고 전적으로 드러날 수 있도록 표현하였다. 건축적 구조의 완결성을 차용한 각각의 오브제를 자세히 살펴보면, 이질적 질감의 요소들 : 목재와 유리, 스테인리스 각각이 서로 내려치고 얽히며 하나의 유기체로 형성되어 있다.
재료 간의 경계는 날카롭고도 유연한 사물로서 놓이며, 물질 간 이질성의 이러한 조형적 긴장은 ‘융합 사물’로 하나의 규칙인 대칭성으로 작용하여 균형을 이루어 간다. 물질성의 대립에서 합의점을 찾아나가는 과정을 확인할 수 있는 본 전시 <이질과 대칭>을 통해 작가 손신규는 물성과 질료를 다루는 작업자로서 새로이 자리매김 해나갈 것이다.
