따뜻한 봄이 시작되는 4월을 맞이하여, 경리단길에 위치한 갤러리 아트딜라이트는 성태진 작가의 ‘더 헤리티지 전’(The Heritage)전을 개최한다.
프랑스 거장 예술가 쟝 샤를 드 까스텔바작의 독점 매니지먼트 파트너로 알려진 갤러리 아트딜라이트는 국내외 작가들의 전시는 물론 신진작가 발굴에도
노력을 아끼지 않는다.
이번 전시는 '태권브이'로 잘 알려진 성태진 작가이다. 나무 부조 작업으로 노동 집약적인 작업을 하는 작가는 이번 전시에서 최근 작인 '국보 시리즈' 위주로 작품을 선보일 예정이다.
어린 시절, 우리에게는 공공연한 비밀이 하나 있었다. 여의도 국회 의사당 돔이 열리면 그 속에 '태권브이'가 나와 하늘을 나르며 악의 무리를 쳐 부술 수 있다는 얘기. 우스갯소리지만 탄압 받고 억울했던 우리 삶에 일종의 대리 만족이었을 것이다. 바로 그 '태권브이'가 작가 성태진에게 투영됐다. 자칫 '키치 문화'의 한 줄기처럼 보이지만 성 작가 손을 거쳐 탄생하는 '태권브이'는 나름 기백과 기상이 엿 보였다. '국보 시리즈'는 그 연장 선에 있는 듯하다.
이번 작품 '국보 시리즈'의 배경에는 작가의 독특한 성장 배경과 이력이 있다. 원래 성 작가는 이과 공부를 했고 대학에서도 공학에 뜻을 두었지만 결국 미술을 전공했다. 그럼에도 그는 전공 보다 역사에 더 많은 흥미를 느꼈고 남 다른 관심을 가졌다. 특히 조국인 대한민국의 역사 중에서도 수탈의 역사에 관심이 많았다고 한다. 수탈의 역사에는 역사의 왜곡이 있기 마련이고 누군가에게는 저항을 불러 일으키게 된다. 마치 '국보 시리즈'는 폭압, 왜곡, 지배에 대한 거룩한 저항처럼 보이고 더 나아가 진실의 회복을 통해 자랑과 긍지를 펼쳐 보이고 싶은 기개를 엿보는 듯 하다. 단순하게 아무 생각 없이 지나쳤던 역사의 왜곡과 호도에 이의를 제기하고 원래 자리로 돌려 놓으려는 작가의 정신은 특히 지금 한반도 정세에도 우리가 돌아보고 지켜야 할 정말 필요한 정신이 아닐까 한다.
This exhibition is a solo show of Tae Jin Seong who is well known for his “Taekwon V” series. The artist engages in labor-intensive wooden relievo work, and plans to show his latest “National Treasure” series in this exhibition.
We had an overt secret when we were little: We talked about the dome of the National Assembly Building in Yeouido can split open to reveal the Taekwon V robot, which can fly to defeat the evil. Although we were joking, I think we were seeking a vicarious satisfaction for our oppressed and unjust lives. That childhood hero of ours, Taekwon V, is projected by Tae Jin Seong. Although his artworks look like a branch of the kitsch culture, the artist creates a reproduction of Taekwon V in a quite spirited and magnificent manner. His “National Treasure” series seems to be an extension of that.
The “National Treasure” series has the unique background and history of the artist. Seong originally majored in science in high school and studied engineering in college, but ended up walking the artistic path in the end. He has been, however, most interested in history than anything else, especially the history of exploitation. The history of exploitation is linked to the distortion of history, which instigates resistance by some people. Seong’s “National Treasure” series looks like a sanctified resistance against oppression, distortion, and domination, as well as a spirit of pride to be achieved by restoring the truth. The artist’s spirit of objecting to the mindless historical distortions and misleading statements, as well as his attempt to return history to its place, is something that we need to reflect on and protect, especially under the current situation on the Korean Peninsula.
